Infamous North Korean hackers are a nightmare for the DeFi segment and crypto as a whole. Yesterday, Aztec Network's growth lead shared how he most likely interviewed one of them for a job. "The world will see the great result from my hands" Mr. Wu has taken to Twitter to share his story about a job interview with a "Solidity developer" that definitely went wrong. He found a candidate through the Greenhouse platform; the applicant claimed he is a skilled Solidity engineer with 6+ years of experience. No bullshit I think I just interviewed a North Korean hacker. Terrifying, hilarious, and a reminder to be paranoid and triple-check your OpSec practices. Here's how it went: — jonwu.eth (@jonwu_) April 29, 2022 The CV of this candidate included the phrase "the world will see the great result from my hands." This looked a bit too villain-style for Mr. Wu. However, he proceed to Zoom interview with the eccentric applicant who pretended to be an Ontario-based engineer. Also, the candidate has 12 GitHub commits in the last year, which is a very low metric for an engineer. When the conversation started, Mr. Wu noticed that "Bobby Sierra" shut off the camera and decided to speak to his potential employer from a loud room. Ads "Mr. Sierra" failed to cover his alleged experience in F2Pool, the largest Ethereum (ETH) mining pool; instead, he mentioned random DAO and NFT projects. Also, he lied about his location: he used "okay" as a filler word, which is often a shibboleth of Korea natives. North Korean hackers in DeFi: Why is everyone scared of them? His English was gibberish and completely "disqualifying," but his accent did not sound like that of most Korean expats. When the candidate went silent for five minutes when asked about his previous occupation, Mr. Wu stopped the dialogue "for better or worse." This strange conversation might be a social engineering attempt to attack Aztec Network. Mr. Wu is not certain about the exact vector of future attack, but he mentioned sending compromised resumes, malicious codebase changes and so on. North Korean hacker group Lazarus is behind the most devastating attacks in crypto history, including the record-breaking Ronin Hack and the stolen NFT collection of DeFi veteran Arthur0x. Yet with the passing of each market cycle, new projects come and go, and the promised utility of these "real-world use case" projects fails to satisfy. While a majority of tokens promise to solve real-world problems, only a few achieve this, and the others are mere speculative investments. Here's a look at the three things cryptocurrency investors can actually "do" with their coins. Lending Perhaps the simplest use case offered to cryptocurrency holders is also one of the oldest monetary applications in finance: lending. Ever since the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector took off in 2020, the opportunities available for crypto holders to lend out their tokens in exchange for rewards have multiplied. Blue-chip DeFi protocols like Aave, Maker and Compound offer reasonable yield on stablecoins, and lesser-known protocols often offer higher rewards in an effort to attract liquidity. Recently, the crypto lending field has expanded into realms that are typically dominated by traditional finance. This is especially true for real estate, where a number of experimental cryptocurrency-based mortgage and listing platforms are making headway. Platforms like Vesta Equity and the newly launched USDC.homes offer crypto holders the opportunity to collateralize their assets to obtain a mortgage or lend them out to aspiring home buyers in exchange for long-term yield. Stablecoin farming Another way to put the hodl bag to use is by farming stablecoins. The cryptocurrency market is well known for its high volatility and high-risk trades, but earning a yield on stablecoins is a safer way to grow a portfolio without the downside risk of investing in Bitcoin (BTC) and altcoins. In bull and bear markets, liquidity is required for DeFi protocols to function properly, and the integration of stablecoins on centralized and decentralized exchanges has helped the market mature and stay sufficiently liquid. Platforms like Curve Finance, Beefy Finance and Trader Joe offer yield on stablecoin liquidity pools, and rates can reach as high as 20% APY. An example of a no-loss token offering is the parachain auctions that occur on the Polkadot and Kusama networks. In this type of protocol launch, investors interested in supporting a project can lock up DOT or KSM for a specified period of time as a form of collateral backing for the project. Contributors receive the native token of the newly launched protocol In exchange for locking their investment in the project's smart contract. After the designated lock-up period is complete, the total balance of tokens is returned to the contributor, meaning they retain their original holdings while also adding new assets to their portfolio. Lockdrops are another example of this type of no-loss token offering. One was recently employed during the launches of Astroport and Mars Protocol. Lockdrops have also been referred to as airdrops because they technically don't help projects raise funds, rather they require some level of commitment for future use from token recipients. While airdrops just distribute tokens to users who opt-in, lockdrops require interested parties to commit to locking up some liquidity that can be utilized by the project during its initial launch. The Astroport launch involved a novel liquidity bootstrapping phase where contributors could provide liquidity pool pairs in exchange for a higher reward level. Upon lockup, a one-time lockdrop reward is distributed to participants to hold, trade or use to provide liquidity. Liquidity providers also receive trading fees and other incentives depending on the liquidity pool they are in as a way to improve the opportunity cost of providing that liquidity. Once the agreed-upon lockup period is complete, users are free to remove the liquidity. No loss token offerings give long-term crypto holders a chance to earn tokens for newly launched protocols in exchange for yield and a choice of what token they would like to accumulate as a reward. Within this time period, SOL was unable to break past the $109 resistance level but was also unable to break the $95 support level. In the past few days, the market structure has been bearish. The price slipped beneath the POC and, at the time of writing, the bulls and bears were fighting for control of the $100 level. The CMF indicators showed strong selling pressure over the previous day and looked to be on the verge of slipping beneath the -0.05 mark to show heavy selling. The MACD, on the other hand, was above the zero line to show bullish momentum and gave a buy signal. However, the overall trend on the lower timeframe remains bearish as $102 remains a resistance zone. This pattern generally sees a breakout upwards. In support of this, the Awesome Oscillator climbed back above the zero line to show bullish momentum. The A/R line also saw a bounce to show the presence of demand and buying volume. However, the market structure on higher timeframes remained bearish. Rather than buying a breakout, selling a retest of the $13 level or the $13.4 supply zone would be the more advantageous trade as it goes with the larger trend. Evidence at hand showed that a downward move was more likely. The RSI was a fence straddler as it hovered around the neutral 50 line in the past few hours. Like the price, the RSI was indecisive too. The OBV presented a clearer picture. In white is a horizontal resistance on the OBV, and this level has been tested on the OBV the previous day, followed by a rejection. Hence, it highlighted how sellers were still dominant in the market. There is also a support level at $21.04, and a session close beneath this level could see ATOM dive toward $20. Two Altcoins Are Soaring After Surprise Listings on Crypto Exchange Binance Handy Apr 30 A low-cap altcoin built on the Stellar (XLM) blockchain is rallying after receiving surprise support from Binance. In a new announcement, the global crypto exchange says that privacy-focused MobileCoin (MOB) will begin trading on its platform. According to the project's website, "MobileCoin is a security-focused cryptocurrency that addresses four fundamental issues: security, transaction speed, energy consumption and optimization for mobile devices." MobileCoin specializes in payments across messaging apps, where only the sender and receiver have access to each transaction's data. A desktop version is also available. The project bills itself as "a simple, encrypted utility currency, like PayPal but secure." News of the Binance listing sent MobileCoin soaring upward in two distinct spikes, rising 101% from $3.62 to a peak of $7.29 before correcting sharply. MOB is still up 24.4% at time of writing and trading at $4.42. Also getting the green light from Binance is Nexo (NEXO), whose lending and borrowing platform allows users to earn up to 17% in annual interest. According to the project's website, Nexo boasts over four million users in more than 200 jurisdictions and currently holds over $12 billion in assets under management (AUM). Binance says of NEXO, "Nexo is a blockchain-based lending protocol that offers banking services for retail users [such as] lending, borrowing, trading [and] credit cards. The NEXO token is used for governance and platform benefits, as well as to receive interest payments." At time of writing, Nexo is up nearly 6% and trading for $2.39. The altcoin initially shot up 23% from $2.21 to $2.72 before correcting down to $2.29. Binance says that both MOB and NEXO will be available for exchange in the Bitcoin (BTC), Binance USD (BUSD) and Tether (USDT) trading pairs. Source: Twitter The color of the dots relates to the price of Ether, with the chart showing that whale wallets began decreasing their holdings when the price was above $4,000 and they didn't start to reaccumulate until after the price dropped below $2,300. Jarvis Labs said, "Whales are continuing to accumulate Ether, their accumulation remains in sideways-to-uptrend." And it's not just the whales who are looking to scoop up Ether on the dip as shown in the following chart where red dots indicate that both whale wallets and smaller wallets have seen an increase in accumulation.  Ether divergence. Merge narrative?" Is an Ethereum decoupling on the horizon? Analysts at Delphi Digital contemplated whether Ethereum price could decouple from BTC leading into or after the merge. It's Web3. "A new model [of the internet] where you as an individual [can] control your identity, and where you don't have a centralized manager, is very powerful. It's very seductive and it's very decentralized," Schmidt, 67, tells CNBC Make It. "I remember that feeling when I was 25 that decentralized would be everything." Web3 is a name coined by some technologists as a new kind of internet service that's built using decentralized blockchains. The idea, at least in theory, is to build a system where it's much harder for a few companies — like Google, which Schmidt helped transform from a Silicon Valley start-up to a global tech behemoth — to control large amounts of the internet's data and content. Schmidt served as Google's CEO from 2001 to 2011, overseeing one of the company's largest and most notable periods of growth. He stayed on as executive chairman until 2017, and technical advisor until 2020. Currently, Schmidt has a net worth of $20 billion, making him the world's 80th-richest person, according to Forbes. But if he were just starting out as a software engineer today, he says, he'd want to work on AI algorithms or Web3. Schmidt says his interest in Web3 involves a concept called "tokenomics," which refers to the specific supply and demand characteristics of cryptocurrencies. Schmidt also notes that Web3 could come with new models for content ownership and new ways of compensating people. "[Web3's] economics are interesting. If you're not already up to date on this event, called "the merge," here's the scoop: Ethereum is transitioning to a different consensus mechanism called proof of stake (PoS). Instead of building and maintaining massive farms of computers in the Siberian tundra to maintain your crypto network, PoS-based networks leverage economic incentives. To join, you simply need to purchase and stake the network's native cryptocurrency. By staking and performing your validating duties correctly, you're rewarded with a yield. But if you process fraudulent transactions or fail to accurately validate blocks on the network, you can lose some of the money you have staked (this is called "slashing," by the way). And though Ethereum hasn't made the transition, the ability to stake ETH has been possible since December 2020. According to data from Dune Analytics wizard hildobby, there has been nearly 12 million Ethereum staked (roughly $34 billion at today's prices). This currently makes up little more than 10% of the entire Ethereum supply. via Dune Analytics Understanding the types of stakers also reveals insight into how decentralized this next iteration of Ethereum will be. Staked.us is a staking-as-service firm, offering services across all PoS networks. Bitcoin Suisse and Stakefish offer a similar service. But it's currently holding more than $450 million in Ethereum. This is a ton of money for a solo staker running a validator out of their apartment. Anyway, another standout figure among these stats is the massive market share that the pooled staking service Lido enjoys. The reason for this is simple though. On other platforms, you typically need to deposit 32 Ethereum to participate in staking. This is obviously quite a lot for the average enthusiast. Kraken, for example, lets folks deposit any amount. The same is true for Lido and Stakefish. Unlike other staking services, though, Lido gives you a token in return called Staked ETH (or just stETH). And because this is an ERC-20 token, it can be plugged back into various DeFi protocols. This means that Lido users can earn a nice yield for staking, but can continue stacking percentage points to that yield by depositing their stETH in various other DeFi protocols. Dogecoin (DOGE) Source: DOGE/USDT on TradingView Based on DOGE's surge from $0.122 to $0.171, a set of Fibonacci levels (yellow) was drawn. It showed the 61.8% and 78.6% retracement levels to be at $0.141 and $0.133 respectively. In the past few days, DOGE has been trading within these levels and has seen a bounce from the $0.134 support level as well. The Directional Movement Index did not show a strong trend in progress, and all the lines were beneath the 20 mark. This further reinforced the idea of Dogecoin trading inside a consolidation phase. The Bollinger Bands were also tight around the price, to show reduced volatility. ApeCoin (APE) Source: APE/USDT on TradingView ApeCoin saw a deep pullback from the $27.6 highs. Once more, the Fibonacci retracement levels plotted showed that the price respected the 78.6% retracement level well. Moreover, $18.6 was a level that rejected APE last week and has now been retested as support. The A/R line has been on an uptrend over the previous day, which suggested strong demand was behind APE's rally from $19. The Awesome Oscillator climbed back above the zero line, to denote bullish momentum behind APE once more. The RSI moved back above neutral 50 as well, to indicate a shift in lower timeframe momentum. STEPN (GMT) Source: GMT/USDT on TradingView GMT has been on a spaceship in the past few weeks, as far as price action is concerned. At the time of writing, it appeared that the pullback to $3.4 was simply a pullback and not the beginning of a downtrend. The VPVR tool showed that the Point Of Control and the Value Area Highs lay at $3.2 and $3.84 respectively. At the time of writing, GMT was trading at $3.97 and would need to fall below $3.09 to suggest a bearish bias. The OBV bounced from a former resistance, which was a bullish development. This suggested the bulls could push prices higher. The RSI also tested neutral 50 as support and climbed higher to show rising bullish momentum. Although the focus has often been on metaverse modalities such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), gaming, Second Life, avatars and so forth, in my view, these modalities represent an interesting evolution or shift from the digital transformation of recent decades to the "transformation of digital." That is exactly what the Metaverse aims to achieve. It might seem abstract and clunky today, but if we dissect the components that make up the Metaverse, we get a glimpse of a transformed digital future. Our identity can persist with our avatars and AR/VR representations and be certain, deterministic and applied with non-repudiation. The things we value are represented in the form of tokenized assets with valuation vehicles that not only prevent double-spending but also leverage blockchain as a transaction system, which brings the fundamental tenets of blockchain (trade, trust and ownership) to the Metaverse. The avatars that represent us can interact with various universes and their value systems, and we reserve the right and ability to monetize our data, effort, talent and all the value they generate. And, as our representation traverses various modalities — such as our avatars via VR to in-game representations — we can use things we value and apply that to an economic and value system of our choosing. Related: Basic and weird: What the Metaverse is like right now The vision and foundation of metaverse success relies upon seamless interoperability and the transfer of value (tokenized or other semantic web constructs) across universes supported by layer-1 and layer-2 networks. All of this supports the interactive modality I see in the Metaverse. So, we have a lot of work to do. We should look at the commercial aspects of the Metaverse and how it is monetized today and presents an opportunity to conduct business tomorrow. Monetizing the Metaverse: How do we do business in the Metaverse? Because Web3 and the Metaverse deal with a construct of tokenized value, we need to look into the financial aspects as a starting point. For instance, an area of my focus is what financial services mean in the Metaverse. We see pervasive financialization of NFTs and the emergence of other asset classes, but what does it mean to monetize the Metaverse? Let us break it down into consumable monetization categories to understand this better. Category 1: Commercializing protocols This category represents the current landscape of infrastructure and projects that rely on community development and broader infrastructure development and support services. These projects monetize in the following ways: Token-based models: Operation fees to write to the blockchain-powered business network's distributed database. Tokens as a medium of exchange: Lending or selling a token as a "step-through" currency, such as with in-network tokens. Asset-pair trading: Monetizing margins. Commercialization of the protocol: Technology services including cloud and software labs and consulting services. The power of networks: Extrapolating the power of networks and exponential power of co-creation models, leading to new business models and resulting in economic value. Related: The metaverse will change the paradigm of content creation Category 2: Simple token sales While broad, the second category applies to the majority of projects that rely on token sales. Tokens are used as a funding mechanism to fuel development. In many cases, these fit a classical definition of security, which is a token sale with a profit expectation. While these tokens can be viewed as in-network token currency, the expectation is that if they become ubiquitous, that ubiquity subsequently extends itself to fungibility and these tokens take on the status of a currency. These concepts are laden with new terms, definitions and twisted economic models and often face regulatory headwinds, but we are just discussing the state of the industry as it evolves. One of the subcategories here is nonfungible tokens (NFTs), where the NFT as an asset class begins to surface as a symbol and community belief instrument, valued by a section or subsection of the community. In gaming, for instance, there are game artifacts; in other ecosystems, they represent art, identity or a substrate of a niche social movement. NFTs seem attractive investment instruments with symbolism and cultural obscurity. We have seen this transformation fuel the end goal of the Metaverse, and NFTs have become a de facto representational instrument in the parallel digital realm. The financialization of NFTs in the digital realm can be compared to an analog to the mobile payments movement triggered by M-Pesa — a concept that started almost two decades ago and in its infancy reached a transaction volume of over $22 million a week with absolutely no financial intermediary, just preloaded conversational minutes traded to move money. While financial institutions salivated at the volume, M-Pesa eventually ended up becoming regulated, and financial institutions got into it via a telco-bank relationship structure. This modality morphed and took the form of actual payments over mobile devices using telco as rails. Comparing this to the digital realm context, the modality of the Metaverse today is represented by elements of virtual and augmented reality, digital art, gaming and Second Life. The underlying economics involving transfers of value is the real goal and the element that has the power to change the world. Related: Understanding the systemic shift from digitization to tokenization of financial services But, as with the M-Pesa case, I want to question and discuss how the current forms of the modality shape the actual form of value transfer and payments. Category 3: The emerging crypto market structure The third category is an important one, as it represents the market structure that has the power to facilitate exchange, interoperability and seamless value transfer — all the tokens and forms of valued assets exposed to some form of financial primitives. These basic financial primitives include buying/selling, borrowing/lending/collateralization and others. Just as in the case of M-Pesa, which ended up being served by regulated entities but changed the payments landscape, I expect financial institutions to make inroads into the Metaverse. These include not only traditional financial institutions but also de novo digital banks and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). This change will bring leverage, financing, loans and so forth, but it may have a unique metaverse flavor to it. This implies a protocol-driven model that provides exchange, value and collateral locking and borrowing — a glimpse of which we already see with concepts like DEX (decentralized exchanges), liquidity pools, automated market makers (AMMs) and NFT marketplaces. Implication and challenges The business of the Metaverse is complicated and not without pitfalls and uphill battles. Just like any new venture, it has a risk component, licensing or regulatory challenges, and staffing issues, and these challenges may be particularly acute for the Metaverse. The challenges include, but are not limited to, the following: Regulation and compliance: The industry is aware of the changing attitudes and regulatory posture around the globe. There is a pervasive lack of regulatory clarity on basic digital assets, as there are many exotic tokens and digital assets emerging and entering the Metaverse. That is to say that taking advantage of what used to be regulatory arbitrage is now an impediment in the global movement of various asset classes in the Metaverse. The broader industry will need to dedicate some capacity to help craft a relevant and fair structure or framework. Technology or protocol risk: Technological challenges around interoperability and identity are still massive roadblocks to the progress and promise of blockchain and, eventually, the Metaverse. If we want the Metaverse to go beyond modality and have an interchangeable mix of digital assets, we need it to be interoperable across various networks and universal ID transactions to be a seamless process with non-repudiation. Incidentally, this also will help with regulatory simplicity. Talent: Industry has a profound shortage of talent, including technologists, token economists and business leaders, to create a team that can stay in place to build, maintain and improvise on projects. Full Bio If you're active in cryptocurrency trading, you'll eventually grapple with this conundrum: crypto mining is an energy hog. According to Bitcoin mining firm CleanSpark of Henderson, Nevada, the production of a single bitcoin takes 1,074 kilowatt-hours worth of energy, the equivalent energy needed to keep a household of four humming for 37 days. The creators of the Ethereum blockchain estimate that mining Ether coins (Ether or ETH) via its "proof-of-work" protocol consumes as much energy annually as the total energy consumption of Finland. It also produces a carbon impact on the environment similar to that of Switzerland.  Why so much energy? As the name suggests, proof-of-work requires work -- specifically a lot of computing power -- as miners compete aggressively to be the first to find a very rare cryptographic hash used to win a block and add it to the blockchain. Being the first to find that hash requires an enormous amount of computer processing power, sometimes in the form of hundreds, if not thousands, of crypto mining rigs operating 24/7. The first miner to find and validate the block gets rewarded in cryptocurrency. The complexity of finding that hash makes it dang near-impossible to go back and alter the history of the blockchain, making the chain impervious to corruption, and therefore very secure. Proof-of-work is the consensus mechanism used for both Bitcoin and Ethereum.  But over the past couple of years, there has emerged a more efficient, less costly, and environmentally-friendlier consensus mechanism used to build blockchains and, in the process, generate crypto coins: Staking. In 2020, the Ethereum blockchain, which creates ETH, began work on enhancements and updates, known at the time as Ethereum 2.0 (or Eth2), a second, separate system of coinage alongside the original Ethereum blockchain. Now known by the Ethereum Foundation as Ethereum Merge, "the merge" moves from the traditional proof-of-work mining approach to what's known as "proof-of-stake," whereby validators put up an amount of capital to attest to the validity of a block. It's what the Ethereum folks call a "new engine" for Ether, and "a public good for the Ethereum ecosystem." Ethereum How proof-of-stake works In proof-of-stake, each new block in the Ethereum blockchain is created when validators, and groups of users in staking pools, stake their altcoins (in this example, Ether) to validate a block on the blockchain. The validators are randomly selected in order to propose the validity of a block. That block needs to be attested by the majority of other validators. So, validators put up their ETH assets as collateral to validate a proposed block (those assets are put on hold during this process). If the block is deemed legitimate, then the stakers receive their assets back plus an additional "reward" of coins for successfully validating the block and staking new coins. If, however, the block is deemed illegitimate, or validators are acting maliciously, the staked amount will be "slashed." Anchorage Digital In staking, validators and those in staking pools split the rewards earned each time a new coin is created. The big appeal of staking is that the amount earned can be sizable, but in reality, it can vary from 2% to 20% depending on the number of validators participating. For those in a staking pool, it's generally less than 10%, compounded annually. Still, there's a reward for those who stake their coins to ensure the chains on a block are legit.   Eventually, the "Beacon Chain" -- the backbone of Ethereum 2.0 -- is expected to merge with the original Ethereum blockchain, whereupon proof-of-work will go away and all Ether will be minted via staking. The current expectation (subject to change) is that the merger will happen this year either in the third or fourth quarter. The energy savings can be significant. According to Ethereum's backers, if the energy per transaction to mine a single Bitcoin were equivalent in size to Dubai's Burj Khalifa (the world's tallest skyscraper at 829 meters), then mining a single Ether coin would be equal in size to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, a mere 56 meters tall. Staking would be only two-and-a-half centimeters, the height of a common screw. Ethereum Ways to stake Ethereum A good place to start learning about staking is in the staking explainer section of Ethereum's website. To qualify as an Ether validator in the comfort of your home, you'll need your computer, an Internet connection and have had to stake 32 Ether coins, which is nearly $91,600 at an exchange rate of $2,862 a coin, as of April 29. If you are running your own rig, there are a lot of technical details about how validation functions that you'll need to bone up on. You can also have someone else run the computer operations on your behalf while you simply lend the 32 Ether, known as "staking as a service," or SaaS. There are numerous service providers to go to for SaaS. One of the more prominent ones is Figment Networks, a Toronto-based start-up that claims to be the world's biggest blockchain infrastructure provider. Figment offers numerous details and insights about the staking process on its website. The current estimated annual yield for staking is between 2% and 20% of the value of your Ether, which you must lend in fixed denominations of 32 Ether. There are a lot of variables that can impact return, such as how many other parties join the staking effort, and how fast the Ethereum blockchain mints new ether coins. For those who don't have $91,600 worth of Ether, a third option is a pooled staking service where multiple parties have their Ether combined by a service provider and staked together. One such service is Lido, which provides pooled staking of Ether and other currencies including Solana, Terra and Kusama. The group claims to have facilitated 75% of recent Ether staking. Lido advertises that it has amassed $10.4 billion worth of Ether in staking operations, and offers a current annual percentage rate return on Ether of 3.8%. Some of the other coins have higher APRs. The tie-up of proof-of-staking A major downside, as with lending, is that staking locks up one's Ether holdings for a period of time. When you stake now, your ETH coins will be locked until the Eth2 rollout is complete. Staking is an emerging service, and so the details are still fuzzy as to how long that period of time will be; perhaps as long as it takes for the proof-of-stake system to achieve smooth operation, which is currently discussed as being up to a year-and-a-half. That's a long time to have your money tied up. To deal with that lockup, crypto trading firm Darma Capital is developing LiquidStake, which will lend the dollar-backed USD Coin (USDC) to anyone who agrees to stake their Ether. The fees for LiquidStake are steep, however—10% to 11% of any rewards generated from staking, plus interest of 13.5% in the form of additional USDC. Similarly, the Lido operation deals with the lock-up via its own token system, called Stacked ETH, or stETH, which stands in for your staked Ether while it's being used. StETH can be used "in all of the same ways" as regular Ether, according to Lido; "sell it, spend it and -- since it is compatible to be used in decentralized finance (DeFi) -- use it as collateral for on-chain lending. "When transactions are enabled on ETH 2.0, users can also redeem stETH for ETH," says the service. There are two main risks to keep in mind with staking. First, if the validators who are using your ETH fail to properly perform the computer operation of validation, then rewards are forfeited for both you and the validator. Second, you can lose half of your Ether stake if multiple parties fail in this way. Both scenarios are considered forms of slashing.  A broader, intriguing, concern is that pools of lenders and validators, such as Lido, become areas of concentration. That produces a number of issues, such as whether a pool can minimize malicious behavior by the validators it oversees. A recent blog post by Lido staff notes that how to run a great staking pool is an emerging discipline and is still being refined. All of these issues are important to keep in mind, but shouldn't discourage you from using your crypto to make a little money on the side while helping to save the planet.
